A new drama that tells the true story of the “Pier” outpost that remained isolated behind enemy lines at the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War. After a week of fighting, the commander must choose between a fight to the last bullet, and the doctor’s plan that may save them
The series recreates the first days of the battle for the pier outpost on the bank of the Suez Canal at the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War in October 1973. Dozens of the outpost’s fighters were then forced to deal alone with a raid by Egyptian army forces, who crossed the canal by surprise on Yom Kippur Day, and in the end they are the ones who are forced to face one of the most difficult dilemmas possible – whether to fight to the death, or surrender and fall into captivity?
The 42 men of the outpost, under the command of a young lieutenant wearing a kippah and a Holocaust survivor (Daniel Gad), fight with supreme heroism in an attempt to repel the enemy attacks, during which half of the fighters are killed or wounded. Inside the outpost bunker, at the same time, a young, secular, newly married reserve doctor from Tel Aviv (Michael Aloni) fights almost alone for the lives of the wounded, who keep coming to the bunker and calling for urgent evacuation, with some of them literally taking their last breaths in his hands. After a week of siege and stubborn fighting, the fighters realize that all rescue attempts have failed, ammunition and medical supplies are depleted, and they prepare for a fateful battle. At this point, a fierce confrontation develops between the idealistic outpost commander, who is ready to fight to the last bullet, and the doctor who pushes for an orderly surrender to the Egyptians under the auspices of the Red Cross, in order to save the lives of the wounded he is treating.
The series uses dramatic tools to describe the Egyptian raid on Israeli territory, the helplessness of the IDF outpost, the heavy blood price in the stronghold on the border of the canal, the cynicism of the military and political echelons, the fall into captivity, the actions of the State Investigation Committee that was established immediately after the war, and at the same time the evil and heroism of the fighters at the outpost, who make up Israeli society in all its aspects.
The series, which was filmed and edited many months before the October 7 massacre, is a chilling future description of the event that will take place 50 years after the events of Yom Kippur – the Hamas massacre in the settlements of the encirclement. Immediately after the broadcast of each episode in the series, the program will be broadcast “After the Pier” presented by Kobi Meydan, which will address the difficulties and traumas left by the war, and the connection between the trauma of Yom Kippur and the trauma of October 7.
