Gather around kids, because Mamma Frieda is reading a book today! This one is a Yiddish book titled “Why only girls?”. It is a Hasidic children’s book that I’ll translate as I read it, so no fancy translations, and I’ll share my reflections. The book caught my eye because it’s a book about the boys in the Hasidic community feeling sorry for themselves, something that’s quite different from what we often hear in popular narratives – that the women are the ones that are to be pitied. This book reflects a lot of internal cultural nuance and I thought was worth buying and reading to you all on a cozy Sunday. Get a cup of hot apple cider and a bite of pumpkin pie and let’s have a reading hour.
