Truly Never Alone: Yael’s Story
When I was asked to sing for Yael — a 6 year old girl in Miami with a sudden and horrific prognosis — I never could have known how her story would change me. I remember the feeling as I sat and sang to her as she lay unconscious in Joe DiMaggio Hospital, praying for a miracle. Holding onto the hope that she could hear me singing, I prayed that the message of Yael’s favorite song would reach her soul: You are protected by G-d and you are never alone, because Hashem can do anything.
And right there, I made Yael a promise. I asked her to fight, to get better, and to prove to the world that it’s not science or humans in control, but that Hashem is the one who determines the outcome, no matter how bleak a prognosis may be. I promised her that when she’d wake up, I’d come back to Miami, to her house, to sing “Never Alone” with her once more.
What happened next was something I will never get over. Against all odds, Yael began to recover. I heard updates as she began to sit, walk, and fight every day. And it was time for me to keep to my end of the deal. About 6 months after our initial meeting, I returned to Miami to fulfill the promise I had made to Yael, months before. As I stood on her doorstep before walking into her house, I was overcome with emotion. It just hit me. This girl is a miracle, and she is proof that G-d truly can do anything.
I walked into Yael’s house and she flew into my arms like we were long lost sisters, finally reunited. It was a moment I will never forget. We sang never Alone together, we hugged, we spoke, and I even went to Yael’s school with her to surprise her class! That day was one that reinforced this message to me of holding onto hope and of holding onto faith above all.
But the story didn’t end there.
Just a few weeks ago, on March 16th & 17th, I had the honor to sing in front of and together with 6,500 women at my New York concert in Kings Theatre.
And there was one living breathing miracle I knew we all needed to see.
And so as I sang Yael’s favorite song, a crowd favorite – Never Alone, with tears in my eyes, I called Yael out to the stage to join me. And there wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre.
As she stood there, singing with me, I just kept thinking “What a full circle moment.” We started off with my singing to her, unconscious, in the hospital, and then together at her house, as she recovered…. and today, she stands with me in front of thousands of people, proving to the world that miracles can happen. Watching her stand there beside me — a living, breathing miracle — was the ultimate reminder that with faith, anything is possible.
And so my friend, if you’re holding on for your miracle, let Yael’s story remind you – never give up, never stop hoping, and remember that Hashem truly can do anything.
All my love,
Shaindy
